The first image of Saoirse in the film Mary, Queen of Scots has been released! We have added the image to our photogallery. The current prediction is that the film will be released in late 2018.
Hey guys! I am back to updating the site after being absent for a while, and thankfully I’ve got some news about MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS to share with you! As you may know, Saoirse has been attached to this project for years, and it seems it is finally coming together now. According to the website Royal Central, the film has a £180 million budget and it is set to film in Edinburgh, Scotland, over the summer.
A £180 million blockbuster movie about Mary, Queen of Scots is to be filmed in Scotland during the summer.
Mary, Queen of Scots, is being written by the creator of House of Cards – the hit American political series. Saoirse Ronan will play the lead role. She previously had award-winning roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Brooklyn.
The film will be shot in Edinburgh. It is finally coming to production after being stuck in development for over a decade.
Producers and backers became enamoured with the screenplay written by Beau Willimon, the man behind House of Cards.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie has been cast as Queen Elizabeth opposite Saoirse Ronan’s Mary Stuart in the upcoming drama ‘Mary Queen of Scots’.
The film will take on the historical family rivalry between Elizabeth and Mary, when the latter attempted to overthrow her cousin’s seat on the English thrown.
Josie Rourke will direct from a script by Michael Hirst and Penelope Skinner. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin are set to produce.
You may recall that over a year ago it was announced that Saoirse was going to star in “Mary Queen Of Scots”, and then not much else was heard. Well it looks like it has found a helmer in Susanne Bier.
The director is in talks to direct the flick, with Penelope Skinner (“How I Live Now”) working on the script with the previously announced Michael Hirst (“Elizabeth”). Ronan will obviously take the juicy leading part, the queen of Scotland, who married a first cousin, who wound up being murdered, then hooked up with the guy accused of setting up the killing, leading to an an uprising and imprisonment in Loch Leven Castle. Mary also attempted to assassinate Queen Elizabeth, leading to her execution. So, definitely lots to dive into for director and star alike.
No word yet on when this might shoot, but the wheels seem to be turning once again on this one, so we’ll keep an ear and eye out.

Saoirse talked about her upcoming role as Mary in the film “Mary Queen of Scots” to STV last month, while promoting the well received Neil Jordan vampire film Byzantium at the Glasgow Film Festival.
“I’m hopefully going to be playing Mary Queen of Scots in the second half of the year, and I’m really looking forward to it, just coming back to Scotland. Scottish history is fascinating, and it’s very similar to Irish history. When I read the script, and I started reading up a little bit about Mary, I found it really touched a nerve, because it’s very similar to what we went through as well. So I really hope it works out, I’d love to play her.”
