The time for another Year In Review has come! This one was marked by the extraordinary success of Lady Bird, and Saoirse’s recognition in a 3rd awards season. Let’s remember its most memorable parts, shall we?
Through the majority of 2017, Saoirse kept to herself and, according to several interviews, took some time off from the hectic entertainment industry. For that reason, we didn’t really have any news until late April, when it was announced that “Loving Vincent”, the world’s first fully painted feature film, would be premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on June 17 (x).
In May, Saoirse starred in the music video for “Galway Girl”, by Ed Sheeran (x). The singer later got a tattoo written by Saoirse that spelled “Galway Grill” instead of the song’s actual title (x).
Also in May, we finally got some news about the production of Mary, Queen of Scots (x). After being attached to it since 2012 (x), Saoirse finally got to play Queen Mary. Filming took place in England and Scotland in the 2nd semester of the year, and the first pictures of her on set were shared online on September 5. A release date has been set for November 2, 2018, in the United States.
On May 30 (I know, bless this month), Saoirse attended her very first public event of the year – the Gucci Cruise 2018 Fashion Show (x). She hid again right after that, however, and only started appearing again in October, when “On Chesil Beach” premiered at the London Film Festival (x). She’s been seen constantly since then, as part of her awards circle promotion for “Lady Bird”.
In September, we got the very first official trailer for Lady Bird (x). Saoirse covered W Magazine’s “The New Royals” issue (x), her first cover of the year. Others would follow suit, all including her in the main contender group for the biggest awards this season.
September and October marked various screenings for “On Chesil Beach” and “Lady Bird”. While the first received mixed reviews at best, the respose to Lady Bird could not have been better in any way. The film has become the biggest box office success of its distributing company, A24, and held the Rotten Tomatoes record for Best Reviewed Film Ever for a couple of weeks (x). Saoirse and Greta Gerwig went on full-on promotional mode toward the end of the year, which resulted in various interviews (x) and talk show appearances for the pair. The film has received numerous award nominations, and Saoirse got over 10 Best Actress nods until we inevitably lost count (who knew there were so many critics’ circles?). Honorable mentions go for her nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards. She has already received Best Actress at the Gotham Awards 2017, but the biggest groups have yet to announce their winners.
In December, Saoirse’s dream of hosting Saturday Night Live came true. She presented what ended up being pretty much an Irish Special, with U2 being the musical guests. Her “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig had a cameo in one of her skits, and the music video for the song “Welcome To Hell” is being considered one of this year’s best by some media outlets (x).
We would not have assumed this after 5 months into 2017, but it ended up being one of the most remarkable ones in Saoirse’s career. After covering the 2016 awards season with her, when “Brooklyn” was getting nominated everywhere, we wouldn’t have guessed we’d be doing it again so soon. And for another fantastic coming of age movie! We couldn’t be prouder.
Thank you for supporting I Heart Saoirse through another year, guys. We had so much fun interacting with you on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and on our very own Forum. May 2018 bring you peace, love and happiness. We’ll see you then! ❤
Thanks for the very interesting post, it’s really appreciated, can’t wait to see what she’s up to next year!
