The Seagull will be screened at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival on April 21st in New York City. It was announced on the official website recently. No word on Saoirse’s attendance yet.
Adapted by Tony Award®-winning playwright Stephen Karam and directed by Tony Award®-winning director Michael Mayer, this exquisite adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s classic The Seagull finds a group of friends and family gathered for a seemingly jovial weekend in the countryside. But under the surface, Nina (Saoirse Ronan) pines desperately for Irina’s (Annette Benning) partner Boris (Corey Stoll), a celebrated playwright. Meanwhile, Masha (Elisabeth Moss) fights a battle with her own unrequited love.
This layered saga about art, fame, family, and human folly plays out with claustrophobic intensity, as the lives of friends, families, and lovers, all living under the same roof, become entangled. The Seagull’s cast of celebrated performers brings fresh perspective to these beloved, complicated characters. Great news! It was announced just yesterday by Playbill that “The Seagull” will be released in May, but with no exact date yet. Read their report below:
The screen adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull, directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer, will be released by Sony Pictures Classics on a date to be announced in May. The film stars Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss, and Corey Stoll.
The movie, which was filmed in 2015 in New York, features a script by Stephen Karam, who won a Tony for his play The Humans. The playwright also adapted another Chekhov play, The Cherry Orchard, which played Broadway in 2016.
Ronan and Bening take on the central roles of aspiring actor Nina and the fading Arkadina, with Tony nominee and Emmy winner Moss as Masha, Stoll as Trigorin, Mare Winningham as Polina, and Brian Dennehy as Sorin as well as Jon Tenney, Michael Zegen, Glenn Fleshler, and Billy Howle.
The film, which is produced by Jay Franke, David Herro, Robert Salerno, Tom Hulce, and Leslie Urdang, features costumes by Oscar winner Ann Roth.
Earlier this week Sony Classics released a brand new still from ‘The Seagull’, where you can see Saoirse as Nina and Corey Stoll as Trigorin. There’s no confirmed release date for the movie yet but it’s expected to be out this year!

Great news! It was announced today by Variety that Sony Classics bought the rights to “The Seagull”, so we can expect news such as release dates and trailers soon enough.
Sony Pictures Classics has acquired most rights to Michael Mayer’s movie adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play “The Seagull,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Annette Bening, and Elisabeth Moss.
The deal covers North America, Germany, Scandinavia, Greece, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia. It excludes China, Korea, and Japan. The film also stars Corey Stoll, Brian Dennehy, Mare Winningham, Jon Tenney, Glen Fleshler, Michael Zegen, and Billy Howle.
“The Seagull,” first performed in 1896, is set at a country estate where guests have gathered to watch a play. “‘The Seagull’ is the heartbreaking and funny story of friends and lovers, all of whom are in love with the wrong person,” Sony Classics said in a statement. “The movie is timely in its depiction of the tragic consequences of narcissism, particularly on young dreams and romantic love.”
Producers are Tom Hulce, Leslie Urdang, Bob Salerno, Jay Franke, and David Herro. Sony Classics is planning a 2018 release.
The deal was negotiated between Sony Pictures Classics, CAA, and Endeavor Content. Hyde Park International represents the remaining world rights.
Mayer said, “If I could dream up the perfect company to release my film, I would conjure Sony Classics. Michael Barker and Tom Bernard have released so many brilliant and varied films in the last nearly 30 years, it’s a huge honor to collaborate with them on the release of ‘The Seagull.’”
The first promotional still from ‘The Seagull’ was released along with an announcement that the film will be promoted on the 66th Berlin International Film Festival next month. Variety reported that Saoirse joined the project for “The Seagull” alongside Annette Bening.
Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening are set to star in a movie adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” which has been added to the Cannes sales slate of Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur’s K5 Intl.
The film will be directed by Michael Mayer, who won a Tony in 2007 for “Spring Awakening” and was nominated for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” last year. It has been adapted by playwright Stephen Karam, who wrote Pulitzer Prize finalist “Sons of the Prophet.” The producers are Leslie Urdang (“Rabbit Hole”), actor-producer Tom Hulce (“Amadeus”) and Bob Salerno (“21 Grams,” “We Need to Talk About Kevin”).
Bening, who has been nominated for four Oscars, most recently appeared alongside Al Pacino in “Danny Collins.” Ronan’s latest credits include “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and Sundance player “Brooklyn,” which Fox Searchlight picked up for the U.S.
Also in “The Seagull” are Corey Stoll, who was Golden Globe nominated for “House of Cards,” and newcomer Billy Howle, who was a standout in Richard Eyre’s Olivier Award-winning production of “Ghosts.” Costumer designer is Ann Roth, and production designer is Jane Musky, with Matthew Lloyd taking on d.p. duties. The film is shooting in upstate New York this summer.
WME and CAA, which helped package the film, are also handling domestic rights.
