Saoirse, Hollywood’s Leading Lady in Waiting

post3

Poised on the edge of adulthood, the Irish actress Saoirse Ronan still lives at home with her parents, but is coming into her own with an Oscar nomination, films with Wes Anderson and Ryan Gosling, and a budding friendship with Patti Smith.

Through the windows of stained and frosted glass, light from the city streets streams in, dusty and mellow. Conversation swells across the paisley carpet and the worn velveteen booths. Watching over it all, as he has done for the past 40 years, is the wry, white-bearded barman, Tommy Smith, a collector of rare books. On the wood-paneled walls, a ramshackle gallery of local artists; on the stools, a mixture of old-timers and Dublin hipsters (much like the Brooklyn variety, except they get their bikes stolen more often). There’s nowhere in the world quite like Grogans, this much-loved pub. If you’re looking for out-of-work Dublin actors, people say, this is where you’ll more than likely find them.

And here, it seems, is another of their number, strolling in from the street in the middle of the afternoon, her Dublin drawl ringing out proud and lively and her vivid blue eyes lighting up as she scores us a corner booth. In her plaid shirt and skinny jeans, she could easily be one of the local hipsters, but — don’t tell the other actors — that’s actually an Oscar nominee in the corner. And don’t blame me for introducing Saoirse Ronan, Ireland’s first honest-to-goodness Hollywood ingénue, just 19 years old, and with the most flawless skin I’ve ever seen, to Dublin’s most notorious bohemian bar. This was her father’s idea.

Saoirse eager to make stage debut

Actress Saoirse Ronan is eager to overcome her severe stagefright to make her theatre debut.

The Oscar nominee admits she has long harboured dreams of treading the boards, like her actor father, The Devil’s Own star Paul Ronan, but she will have to confront her fears of performing in front of a live audience first. She tells The New York Times Style Magazine, “I think it (performing in a theatre) is in the blood. And even though I’m terrified about doing it, if something goes all right on stage, it must be the most amazing feeling.”

However, Ralph Fiennes, the actress’ co-star in upcoming film Grand Budapest Hotel, is convinced the 19 year old would be a “natural” and “fantastic” on stage. He adds, “She just seems to have been gifted with something, where she seems to have none of the anxiety the rest of us have. She’s very special.”

Veronica Roth hails Saoirse

Veronica Roth, the 25-year-old American author of the best-selling fantasy trilogy ‘Divergent’, has revealed that she is a huge fan of actress Saoirse Ronan, and would love to see her cast in the upcoming film adaptations of her hit teen books.

The first of the best-selling ‘Divergent’ trilogy has already been made into a movie, which is due to be released in March, and Roth revealed that she would be happy if Carlow actress Ronan was cast in the upcoming movies. “I am trying to think of what she could do. She could do anything – she’s great,” Roth said. The young author was in town at a ticket-only event in Eason’s, Dublin – where she met 200 fans and signed copies of the final instalment of the series – ‘Allegiant’ – which was released last week.

Speaking to the Irish Independent shortly before she took to the stage, Roth said she was “excited” to be in Dublin. “The city is beautiful,” she said. Some of the 200 “super-fans” who were lucky enough to snap up tickets were Alex Shelley (15), Louise Lennon-Malbasha (16) and Kirsty Byrne (15). The trio were there as part of a larger group of 14, comprised of school friends and connections made on social media sites over their love of ‘Divergent’.

Roth is not the only high-profile American fan that the Oscar-nominated Ronan has won over in recent times, as an interview with the actress in the ‘New York Times’ last week revealed that she had developed the most unlikely of friendships – with veteran punk queen Patti Smith.

The ‘Atonement’ actress said that she and Smith had a moment at the New York premiere of her recent box-office hit ‘The Host’, where Smith had turned up in the hope of meeting her. “She took my hands and gave me some amazing words of wisdom,” Ronan said. The two then exchanged emails, and the 19-year-old has said that the 66-year-old rocker is the “most incredible” celebrity she has met since she was catapulted to fame.

“Out of all the people I’ve met through showbusiness, she’s the most incredible, such a generous and kind and intelligent woman.”

Saoirse To Replace Rooney Mara in “Brooklyn”

Rooney Mara is out and Saoirse Ronan is in for the long-gestating adaptation of Colm Toibin’s novel “Brooklyn,” according to Bleeding Cool, who heard it straight from the horse’s mouth, director John Crowley. But the good news is at least this project is finally moving along again and with a real Irish actress to boot.

Now Ronan will star as Ellis Lacey, a 1950s Irish girl who reluctantly leaves her small village to take a job offer in New York City. There, she begins to adjust and enjoy her new freedom, falling in love along the way. When she’s called back to Ireland suddenly, she meets another man on home soil, and must choose between the two men and the two cities they represent. Nick Hornby adapted the novel for the big screen and Crowley tells BC they want to shoot it next year.

Ronan, who’s been critically acclaimed in smaller films like “Atonement” and “Hanna,” has been linked to one big budget franchise after another lately, with “Fantastic Four” joining “Star Wars: Episode VII” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Even if none of those work out, she still has an impressive upcoming slate that includes Wes Anderson’s “Grand Budapest Hotel” and Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut “How to Catch a Monster.”

“How I Live Now” Gets UK Release Date

British distributors Entertainment One have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Kevin Macdonald’s latest film How I Live Now (2013), starring Saoirse Ronan, George MacKay, Harley Bird, Tom Holland, and Anna Chancellor. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is February 10th, 2014.

Understandably cold and aggressive after being shipped off to Britain from America to stay with her distant relatives, Daisy (Ronan) is initially weary of her new home in the English countryside, but as a relationship develops between Daisy and her cousin Edmond (MacKay), she starts warming to her new surroundings. Left to their own devices while her Aunt Penn (Chancellor) is abroad involved in peace negotiations, the group enjoy their idyllic surroundings and isolation from parental influence. However, when World War Three breaks out over Europe and Britain is taken over by military forces, the group is split up and detained in prisoner-of-war camps. With nothing left to lose, Daisy begins planning her escape in the hope of reuniting with her lover, but with war taking its toll on everyone throughout the country, she grows fearful of what she may find…
