Saoirse to star in ‘On Chesil Beach’

Saoirse has a new project! She is set to star in ‘On Chesil Beach’, based on the 2007 tome by Booker Prize-winning novelist Ian McEwan – who also wrote the novel ‘Atonement’, the film adaptation that resulted in Saoirse’s first Oscar nomination. The news come from Variety.

Saoirse Ronan is set to topline “On Chesil Beach,” based on the 2007 tome by Booker Prize-winning novelist Ian McEwan.

Pic is produced by Number 9 Films’ Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, the team behind Oscar-nominated “Carol” and “Youth.”

Dominic Cooke, who has recently helmed TV mini-series “The Hollow Crown” starring Tom Hiddleston, will direct the project. It is skedded to lense in Autumn this year.

Ronan, who is also up for best actress at this year’s Academy Awards for her role in 1950s-set Irish immigrant story “Brooklyn,” will play the lead role of Florence in “Chesil Beach.”

The story is set in Blighty in 1962 and sees a young and talented violinist (Florence) dream of a career on a concert stage and the perfect life she will create with an earnest young history student (Edward). It follows the precise depiction of two young lovers to the touching story of how their unexpressed misunderstandings and fears shape the rest of their lives.

Project marks the second time Ronan has been cast in a pic based on a McEwan tome: The thesp played alongside James McAvoy and Keira Knightley in 2007’s “Atonement,” directed by Joe Wright. The thesp will also reunite with Number 9 Films after they worked together on vampire pic “Byzantium.”

Number 9 Films has a rep for producing high-quality and prestigious adaptations. In addition to producing “Carol” alongside Christine Vachon’s Killer Films (which has received six Oscar nods this year), the shingle has just finished lensing “The Limehouse Golem,” based on the tome by Peter Ackroyd, 2012’s “Great Expecations,”directed by Mike Newell and an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s “Midnight’s Children.”

Saoirse stars in new Hozier video

Hozier and Saoirse Ronan have teamed up for a new campaign to shed light on the issue of domestic violence, with the Oscar-nominated actress starring in his latest video – which comes out this Sunday, February 12, on iTunes to benefit domestic abuse charities worldwide including the Irish charity Safe Ireland.

Irish director Dearbhla Walsh, who has directed episodes of EastEnders and The Tudors, was behind the camera for the video for Cherry Wine, which sees Ronan play a woman dealing with a physically abusive relationship alongside Waterford actor Moe Dunford, star of Patrick’s Day and Game of Thrones.

The single is being released on February 14, and all proceeds from downloads will be donated to international domestic abuse charity organisations.

Hozier, who wrote the song from the male perspective of an abuse sufferer, said: “Domestic violence is an ongoing issue in our society, the statistics of which are shocking and the effects of which damage whole families, communities and span generations.

“With the song Cherry Wine, I tried to get across the difficulty of coming to terms with and facing up to domestic violence and the dynamic of an abusive relationship. I’m honoured to be joined by Saoirse Ronan, Dearbhla Walsh and Moe Dunford in spreading awareness on this issue.”

Ronan added: “I am equally honoured to join Hozier to create awareness for the #FaceUpToDomesticViolence campaign with the release of Cherry Wine as a charity single. The song has always been one of my favourite tracks on his album. I hope through the video and song we can shine light on the issue and complexity of domestic abuse and in doing so help those caught up in the cycle of domestic violence”.

Saoirse to star in Greta Gerwig’s ‘Lady Bird’

According to an article just posted by Mike Fleming Jr on Deadline, Saoirse is set to star in ‘Lady Bird’, the writing and directorial debut of actress Greta Gerwig. IAC Films is financing the film, which is being produced by Scott Rudin, Eli Bush and Evelyn O’Neill.

Ronan will play a high school senior, spending her last year at home in Sacramento. Deal comes as Ronan was just Oscar nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Brooklyn, the John Crowley-directed film that debuted at Sundance last year. It’s her second Oscar nom, following her breakthrough turn in Atonement. Ronan also got Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG nominations for Brooklyn, which was released November 4 by Fox Searchlight.

Ronan will work this around her Broadway debut this spring in Arthur Miller’s classic drama The Crucible, which Rudin is also producing. She recently wrapped an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, and was last seen in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. Ronan is represented by CAA and Macfarlane Chard.

Gerwig is getting behind the camera after co-writing with director Noah Baumbach Mistress America, a film she starred in. Gerwig is also starring in Jackie, the drama that chronicles Jacqueline Kennedy’s four nightmare days following the assassination of her husband, John F. Kennedy. She is also part of the ensemble cast of Weiner-Dog, which premieres here at Sundance, and plays the title role in Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan. Gerwig is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.
