Saoirse eager to make stage debut

Actress Saoirse Ronan is eager to overcome her severe stagefright to make her theatre debut.

The Oscar nominee admits she has long harboured dreams of treading the boards, like her actor father, The Devil’s Own star Paul Ronan, but she will have to confront her fears of performing in front of a live audience first. She tells The New York Times Style Magazine, “I think it (performing in a theatre) is in the blood. And even though I’m terrified about doing it, if something goes all right on stage, it must be the most amazing feeling.”

However, Ralph Fiennes, the actress’ co-star in upcoming film Grand Budapest Hotel, is convinced the 19 year old would be a “natural” and “fantastic” on stage. He adds, “She just seems to have been gifted with something, where she seems to have none of the anxiety the rest of us have. She’s very special.”

Veronica Roth hails Saoirse

Veronica Roth, the 25-year-old American author of the best-selling fantasy trilogy ‘Divergent’, has revealed that she is a huge fan of actress Saoirse Ronan, and would love to see her cast in the upcoming film adaptations of her hit teen books.

The first of the best-selling ‘Divergent’ trilogy has already been made into a movie, which is due to be released in March, and Roth revealed that she would be happy if Carlow actress Ronan was cast in the upcoming movies. “I am trying to think of what she could do. She could do anything – she’s great,” Roth said. The young author was in town at a ticket-only event in Eason’s, Dublin – where she met 200 fans and signed copies of the final instalment of the series – ‘Allegiant’ – which was released last week.

Speaking to the Irish Independent shortly before she took to the stage, Roth said she was “excited” to be in Dublin. “The city is beautiful,” she said. Some of the 200 “super-fans” who were lucky enough to snap up tickets were Alex Shelley (15), Louise Lennon-Malbasha (16) and Kirsty Byrne (15). The trio were there as part of a larger group of 14, comprised of school friends and connections made on social media sites over their love of ‘Divergent’.

Roth is not the only high-profile American fan that the Oscar-nominated Ronan has won over in recent times, as an interview with the actress in the ‘New York Times’ last week revealed that she had developed the most unlikely of friendships – with veteran punk queen Patti Smith.

The ‘Atonement’ actress said that she and Smith had a moment at the New York premiere of her recent box-office hit ‘The Host’, where Smith had turned up in the hope of meeting her. “She took my hands and gave me some amazing words of wisdom,” Ronan said. The two then exchanged emails, and the 19-year-old has said that the 66-year-old rocker is the “most incredible” celebrity she has met since she was catapulted to fame.

“Out of all the people I’ve met through showbusiness, she’s the most incredible, such a generous and kind and intelligent woman.”

Eoin Colfer wants Saoirse for “Artemis Fowl”

Author Eoin Colfer has revealed that he would like Saoirse Ronan to play one of the lead roles in the big-screen adaptation of his Artemis Fowl series of books. It was recently announced that Disney will adapt his highly popular novels into a Hollywood film, and now, the Wexford-born author has spoken about his desire to keep the project in Ireland.

He told the Irish Independent: “That would be the dream, to have it made in Ireland, with Irish actors in it. Saoirse Ronan would be the dream cast for Holly (one of the main characters).” The Artemis Fowl film will be produced by Harvey Weinstein with Michael Goldenberg writing the script. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will be among the producers for the project. Colfer said: “They are serious guys, and even their names involved in something can give it weight and a gravitas. The writer wrote one of my favourite movies, Contact, but he also wrote [the screenplay] one of the Harry Potter’s, so he’s a guy that knows how to do science fiction and kids’ stuff.”

Saoirse addresses Scarlet Witch rumors once again

Saoirse had talked about playing Scarlet Witch not very long ago, as you can read here, and she has now addressed the rumors once again.

“[Joining Avengers 2 as Scarlet Witch is] not happening, no! I think that was just one of those little rumours floating about.”

Considering the casting for Wanda (Scarlet Witch) has already begun, it is possible that Saoirse is actually not in the running. Unless, of course, she’s been told to keep her involvement secret, although I’m not sure why that would be necessary. Maybe, if her casting is part of a big Comic Con reveal, or other such giant media event. Perhaps we shall find out soon?

Saoirse Addresses Scarlet Witch Rumours

Joss Whedon has recently been discussing the fact that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be appearing in The Avengers 2, with rumours circulating that Saoirse is the frontrunner to play the latter.

The Hanna star addressed those rumours this week, stating that she’d jump at the chance to play the comic book character.

“I have heard about it and yes, I would” she told The Mary Sue. “Of course I would. I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes.

“I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.”

Max Irons talks about Saoirse

During a recent interview for the website Flicks & Bits, Saoirse’s “The Host” co-star Max Irons praised her on-set demeanor, saying he instantly hit it off with her and that she’s very professional.

“From the first moment I met her in London, I knew it was going to be easy,” the actor explained. “Some people are just easy to work with, and you watch her and you look at her face and think, ‘What is she doing that’s so special?’ You can’t define [her charm], it’s just there – it’s all there, everything! She is always spot-on and perfectly informed.

It still amazes me that she was 17 when we shot the film. I worked most closely with her and with William Hurt, two masters of their craft, and both were so humble, patient and generous. It was a joy. I listened and learned a lot from William Hurt, he is a master.

“When I went into the audition room there were three guys sitting there, all of which were built like Greek gods. So I thought, ‘Well, what’s the point?’ I forgot my lines about eight times, I think – and I was sweating profusely. But then it started to go really well, I thought that the chemistry was certainly there with Saoirse. It ended up being one of those auditions that was painless and effortless.”
